SIXTEEN

Chris insisted we break into teams to search for clues. I had no idea what he expected us to find, but I was happy to get away from the rest of the group. I wasn’t surprised when Jack followed me, and even before he opened his mouth I knew what he was going to say.

“I’m not angry,” I volunteered right away, moving to the area behind the trailers Poet and her friends bedded down in every night.

“You’re not angry,” he agreed. “You’re annoyed.”

“I’m not ... .” I was annoyed. Denying it would get us absolutely nowhere. When I looked to his eyes, I found a half smile on his face. That only agitated me further. “You’re right. I’m totally annoyed.”

“I wasn’t taking Laura’s side.”

“Of course not. That would be ridiculous.” I went back to searching the ground. I really didn’t expect to find anything. I still looked, if only so I didn’t have to focus on Jack.

“I was trying to protect you ... and Poet.”

I stilled, surprised. “Excuse me? Exactly what were you trying to protect us from?”

“Your mouth.”

I was understandably offended. “Hey!”

His smile was back and he was clearly amused by my reaction. “I happen to love your big mouth. But I believe that when you said we were much like them that you were teetering on a very fine line. Chris can’t know what they do in their spare time.”

“I didn’t mean it like that,” I reassured him. “I just meant that we’re both groups who work together to solve problems.”

“Except on the surface, they’re not. They’re a group that performs for the masses.”

I cocked my head to the side as I considered what he’d said. “I guess I can see that,” I admitted finally, although it was like talking around a mouthful of glass because it was so painful. “But I didn’t out them.”

“No, and you would never purposely do that. I can see your mind working from a hundred feet away. You’re trying to puzzle this all out. I get it — I really do — but we have to be careful. If Chris finds out what these people can do ... .”

“Chris would never hurt them,” I cut him off.

“Of course not. He has a heart of gold. He might, however, out them and then not understand why the public turns on them in the aftermath. He assumes everyone is as excited as he is at the prospect of the unknown. That’s not the case.”

My shoulders suddenly felt heavy and I heaved out a sigh. “People fear the unknown.” I knew that better than most. “That was what my parents tried to instill in me ... a healthy dose of fear.”

An emotion I couldn’t quite identify flashed in the depths of his eyes. “I don’t ever want you to be afraid,” he promised. “But you must be careful. There are people out there who would like nothing better than to catch someone like your friend Poet — or you, for that matter — and figure out what makes you tick.
